Shaving advice for the first time shaver
1. To achieve a satisfying shave, use a clean, sharp razor such as the Gillette Mach 3, never use blunt or rusty razors.
2. Wash the face with warm water and a gentle soap to soften skin and open the pores or warm the face with a hot wet flannel for 30 seconds.
3. Apply shaving cream to the face, mouth area and neck. Using a shaving brush with a good quality shaving cream helps to lock in moisture and raise the facial hairs creating a closer shave.
4. Shave with the beard, stretching the skin using facial expressions, mouth and jaw movements. Shaving against the grain is the biggest cause of razor burn so go with the grain to begin.
5. Start at the side of the face using short strokes. Make sure to apply only a slight amount of pressure.
6. If you cut yourself, apply a moist alum block on the area to stop bleeding. After shaving, close the pores by rinsing the face with cool water
7. Re- hydrate and protect the skin, by applying an alcohol free moisturiser.
General skin care advice for men
More and more men are becoming aware of the importance of caring for their skin. It is the largest organ of the human body and a good indicator of our general health. Factors such as stress, lack of sleep, smoking and excess alcohol can all take their toll. We are ever more conscious of the effect that harmful Ultra-Violet rays can have on our skin and central heating and air-conditioning are also detrimental. The result of these factors is premature ageing of the skin, resulting in dryer, thinner skin, loss of elasticity and wrinkles.
Moisture is vital to skin. MOISTURISING protects the particularly vulnerable skin of the face which is regularly exposed to environmental elements and atmospheric pollution. Maturing skin requires more attention to its moisture content (just compare a raisin to a grape!)
Skin types vary but basically fall within the range of Dry to Oily.
Dry skin is characterised by a dull, chalky appearance, may be flaky and more lined and often feels ‘tight’ after washing. It is to be noted however that flakiness may also simply be an indication of an accumulation of dead skin cells which can be improved by EXFOLIATING. Those with dry skin are also more vulnerable to environmental factors and are likely to develop wrinkles at an early age if the skin is not kept supple.
Oily skin has a shiny appearance, the pores are usually larger and it is more prone to blemishes, including blackheads and whiteheads. Blackheads are caused by an excess of oil or sebum lodged in the neck of a follicle. Whiteheads have no opening so are not so easily unblocked. Spots also develop when sebum thickens, combines with grime and dead skin cells and blocks the pore. Bacteria multiplies in the blockage, causes infection and results in the spot. Regular CLEANSING is the key to dealing with all these blemishes.
Some skin may also be sensitive. It is likely to be paler, often freckled and more easily affected by exposure to the elements as well as certain substances. Those with sensitive skin may suffer with itchiness or redness and it is important to treat it more gently. Therefore, products containing more simple ingredients, lower in alcohol and perfume, are preferable.
As we age our skin requires richer moisturising. Exfoliating also helps to stimulate the skin renewal process as this slows down as we get older. The result is cleaner, brighter and more supple skin.
Tiredness or eyestrain can cause puffiness around the EYES. A gentle eye cream or gel can soothe this more delicate area.
Dark circles can also be treated in this way.
To summarise, there is no doubt that a regular routine of skin care - Cleansing, Exfoliating and Moisturising - will improve the condition of our skin and contribute to our overall appearance. Its importance can never be neglected by the well-groomed man.
How to deal with razor burn and minor shaving cuts and nicks
It’s inevitable that one day you’ll nick yourself during shaving. One effective method of dealing with razor burn or a minor nick is to use an Alum Block. An Alum Block acts an antiseptic and astringent, this tightens the pores and helps to stem any bleeding. Many men block regularly as it creates a refreshing and tingling sensation on the skin. To apply an alum block, moisten with cold water and simply run it across your shaved face and neck area. You’ll find it will stem bleeding and reduce redness or razor burn caused by wet shaving. Manicure tips for men
First impressions count or so they say so clean, well manicured nails can say a lot about you. Nails consist of keratin which grows at the rate of around 3mm a month. (A man’s fingernails generally grow faster than a woman’s) Dirty or neglected nails can give the wrong impression so a simple weekly manicure routine can make a positive difference.
Shape your nails with a nail file from the edges to the centre being careful not to apply to much pressure, sweeping the file in one direction. This will help to avoid damaging the nail. Shaping the cuticles may be made easier if you soak your nails briefly in warm soapy water beforehand. This avoids scraping the sensitive nail bed.
Finally don’t neglect your diet. A well balanced and nutritious diet can help strengthen your nails.
1. Recognise the Symptoms
Prolonged stress can result in physical symptoms such as
head aches, digestive disorders and sleeplessness, susceptibility to colds, sexual dysfunction and depression. More seriously, you may suffer with chest pain or dizziness, which require professional attention.
Changes in behaviour are another manifestation of stress-overload, for example irritability, inability to concentrate, sense of frustration or panic attacks.
In today’s demanding lifestyle many of us have experienced these warning signs.
Be honest and acknowledge them – they are harmful.
2. Recognise the causes
Now sit down and be frank with yourself. Can you identify the cause? Can you control it? If you can, take action – change things. What you can’t control you have to learn to let go.
3. Change your attitude
Aim to start each new day with a positive outlook. Have a ‘to do’ list which is realistic and prioritise. Do not be too rigid - be prepared for the unexpected.
4. Change your behaviour
Diet and exercise have a fundamental role to play in our sense of well being. Things such eating healthy meals and snacks, keeping hydrated and getting enough sleep can easily be underestimated in a busy lifestyle. Take regular breaks. Doing some exercise every day, even if it’s just a walk out in the fresh air and daylight will be beneficial. A change of scene works wonders!
5. Can’t see the wood for the trees?
Stress is a reaction to events and problems and you can get fixed in the way you view things. Seek another perspective – chat with a friend. In fact, even chatting about something completely different will be refreshing. Don’t neglect your relationships – they are your support network.
6. Try to see the funny side
Keeping your sense of humour is invaluable to keeping your perspective. Very few things in life are really that important.
7. Learn to say ‘no’
You are entitled to have some control over your life. Value your own space.
8. Let it all out
Sing out loud to your favourite song, enjoy your favourite comedy show or just have a laugh with your friends. You’ll soon get those feel-good vibes. Even chomping on some chewing gum is beneficial apparently.
9. Relax
As well as exercise, just stopping and flopping can be good too – lie down, close your eyes and let your mind drift for 10 minutes.
Explore other relaxation techniques, maybe listening to some of the many specifically designed CDs or perhaps try a massage.
Don’t neglect your sex life – the physical intimacy and release will leave you tranquil and aid good quality sleep.
10. Give yourself a pat on the back
At the end of the day, review your ‘to do’ list, acknowledge your achievements and the difficulties you’ve had. Write your list for the next day – then forget about it!
Remember, some short-term stress can actually be beneficial. It can enhance your memory and thinking ability. Prolonged stress has the opposite effect. Make sure you’re the one in control.
